The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is a 22,500-member organization dedicated to advancing individual technical knowledge and the collective engineering capabilities of governments (federal, state, and local), the uniformed services, and private industry in the interest of national defense.

The Lake Michigan Post draws its membership from the civilian and military communities of northeastern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin. It serves the military community primarily located at Naval Station, Great Lakes, Illinois. The major commands at Great Lakes are Navy Region Midwest, Naval Service Training Command, Naval Recruiting Training Command, Training Support Center, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), Midwest, Naval Health Clinic, Hospital Corps School, Naval Reserve Center, Chicago and Marine Air Control Group 48.
